  1. Wow. Amazing post! I think the closest I’ve been to that experience was that taxi journey in New Delhi! But I’m so glad you persevered and did not fly back the following day ;-) enjoy your time there and keep writing great stuff like this!
    I’ll see you soon xx

  2. Great piece! Can’t wait for the next instalment. Your blog would make a fine book. My Lima experience was just 2 touristy days’ shore leave from a freighter 30 years ago. But I came away with vivid memories and a desire to return “someday”. (Chances for that are fading.) Good luck! Mary

    • That’s nice to hear as that’s what I intend to do sometime in the future. I’ve actually got two ideas for a book, so I guess I’ll just have to work out which one to start first :-)

    • Oh I love Brazil, particularly São Paulo and I would stay there if I could find a decent job…that’s why I moved to Perú.

I’m a social worker working in a disadvantaged community in Trujillo (not too unlike the communities you mention in your article), so I understand your sentiment. I feel entirely uncomfortable with the idea of going and gawking at poverty as if it is some kind of tourist attraction. Feels kind of like a human zoo.

  3. Clever beginning Andy to make a good point. To get out of your comfort zone sometimes you just have to jump in the deep end and start swimming (lanzarse a la piscina – as they say in Spanish). And remind yourself of previous times you’ve done the same and it worked out well.

Good on you for going to Trujillo and not staying in your comfort zone in Sampa.

    Looking forward to part II.

  4. oooh, i’m intrigued to see how you find living in trujillo – considering moving there as my peruvian boyfriend recently moved back there. good luck settling in!

  6. Nice post. I find out something alot more challenging on different blogs everyday. It is going to normally be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice just a little something from their store. I’d prefer to use some using the content on my weblog whether you do not mind. Natually I’ll provide you with a link on your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.
