Back in the heady days of February 2012, when I first arrived in São Paulo, a particularly vivid memory was that of witnessing the entire Mocidade samba school march down our street as part of their rehearsals for Carnaval.
On Friday, exactly one year after leaving London, they kindly repeated the act, this one being their final street rehearsal ahead of Carnaval next weekend. I’m glad to say that I was prepared for it this year and managed to get downstairs in time to capture it at street-level.
So, if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to have an entire Samba school dance down your street at 11pm, here goes:
You should participate in one of the blocos. I’m not sure if Sao Paulo has them, but Rio and Belo Horizonte definitely does. It is a unique experience. Grab a few beers and let yourself go
Hey Romulo, I went to Rio Carnaval in 2008 and caught some blocos there. One’s theme was shit, so everyone involved in the bloco had t-shirts with pictures of poo on them. Some were even wearing plastic turds on their heads. Very odd.
We do have them here in SP and I’m definitely gonna try and catch some. Would be a shame not to!

Ouro Preto is fantastic, it’s one of the favourite places that I’ve been to in Brazil. Have you got much time to explore Minas? You should REALLY go to Inhotim, it’s amazingly cool. I wrote a post about it and Minas here if you’re interested:
